What is a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies range from minor to severe and can include any of the following situations:

  • Severe toothaches
  • A lost dental restoration, like a lost filling or crown
  • Damage to the soft tissues of the mouth
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • A partially or fully knocked-out tooth

What Do I Do if My Child Has a Serious Injury in Addition to Damaged Teeth?

If your child has a broken jaw or other serious injury, we recommend that you visit the emergency room before seeking dental treatment. In the event that your child has life-threatening injuries, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

What Can I Do Until My Appointment?

It is important that you help keep your child calm through example. If you panic, your child may become distressed. Instead, follow some of our emergency care instructions.

Chipped and Fractured Teeth
While some chips are painless, some can cause discomfort. Call our office if your child chips a tooth. Until you get your child to our office, follow these tips:

  • If the tooth has broken off in any place, rinse the tooth piece in lukewarm water and bring the tooth to our office
  • Apply gauze to any bleeding areas
  • Place a cold compress on the cheek over the area to minimize swelling and pain

Dislodged or Loose Teeth
Although losing baby teeth is a common occurrence for children, losing an adult tooth can be a stressful and life-changing experience. If your child has a dislodged tooth, we recommend placing a cold compress over the area to decrease swelling and discomfort.

Avulsed (Knocked-Out) Teeth
If your child’s adult tooth has been knocked out of its socket, call our office as soon as possible. Time is critical when determining if we can replace the tooth. Follow these steps:

  • Rinse the mouth to remove blood and other debris
  • Place a cold compress over the area to reduce swelling
  • Touch the crown only when touching the tooth. Do not touch the root.
  • Rinse the tooth with water. Do not use soap or chemicals. Do not scrub the tooth. Do not wrap it in tissue
  • If at all possible, place the tooth into the socket and have your child hold it in place by biting down. If this is not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container of milk.
